Service Line Protection for You and Your Home
Many Wilmington homeowners are unaware that the water service line and sewer line that connects their home to our city water and sewer mains are their responsibility to maintain— and that repairs can be challenging to deal with and cost thousands of dollars.
Since 2016, the City of Wilmington has partnered with American Water Resources to offer a variety of optional service line protection programs for homeowners in our service area—to date serving more than 3,400 Wilmington customers.
These programs will help you to protect your home from costly and unexpected water, sewer, and home service repairs. While they are entirely optional, these programs offer peace of mind and can help to safeguard your finances when an unexpected service line or home service issue occurs.

-
Individual policies vary, but standard homeowners’ insurance policies typically do NOT cover repair or replacement of water service lines or sewer lines.
- How Does the Program Work?

In the event of an issue with a covered line, customers should contact American Water Resources directly to coordinate the repair. AWR will assign a local contractor for the job. The customer will receive confirmation of the repair time and contractor’s name, along with an ETA of their arrival. The contractor will assess the issue to ensure it is covered and complete repair in a timely manner.
- Are There Situations or Issues That the Program Will Not Cover?
-
Yes, there are circumstances or existing conditions that American Water Resources excludes from covered repairs. You should review the terms and conditions of your protection plan carefully to understand the coverage limits and exclusions.
