A service line inventory is a comprehensive record of all service lines in the water system. It classifies the materials of each line (lead, galvanized requiring replacement (GRR), non-lead, or unknown), details material classifications for both the system- and customer-owned sides where ownership is split, and provides location identifiers (such as street addresses) for lead and GRR lines.
This inventory is essential for identifying and replacing lead service lines, which is a crucial step in reducing lead exposure in drinking water and protecting public health. As part of the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, effective October 16th, 2024, every public drinking water utility must create a service line inventory.
What is a Service Line?
A water service line is an underground pipe that transports water from Wilmington's main supply to the meter and then from the meter to a home or business. These pipes are usually small, with a diameter of 2 inches or less. Service lines and connections can be made of various materials, including copper, galvanized iron, lead, or plastic.
